April 2023 Newsletter: Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Dear Friend,
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and at Lift Our Voices, we are committed to continuing our work to support all survivors of workplace toxicity and harassment, including sexual assault.
Lift Our Voices has been working to eradicate mechanisms in the workplace that are preventing workers from coming forward and speaking up. These silencing tools enable abuse. Although we made huge strides last year by passing two federal bipartisan laws that are game changers for survivors, during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it is important to acknowledge that our work is far from over.
Don’t miss Lift Our Voices co-founders at these upcoming events:
On Thursday, April 27 at 2:00 p.m. ET, Gretchen Carlson will join the Woolf Group to discuss how NDAs are preventing survivors from coming forward and getting justice, including our work to advocate for the federal Speak Out Act’s passage. You can register today on Eventbrite.
On Wednesday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m. ET, Julie Roginsky will join the New York Financial Writers’ Association for a panel on ‘The Impact of #MeToo on Wall Street, Corporate America & the Media.’ Julie will discuss our work to eliminate the legal previsions that keep survivors silent, and talk about how our federal Speak Out Act, which eliminates NDAs for sexual misconduct, is making the workplace safer for all. To RSVP, email contact@nyfwa.org, and you can learn more about the event here.
On Monday, May 8, Lift Our Voices will hold a press conference with other advocates in Albany, NY, including the Sexual Harassment Working Group, to support the “Stop Silencing Survivors Act” (A2555/S4233). This New York bill ensures that survivors are protected to speak freely about their work experience if and when they choose.
Gretchen Carlson will join The 19th for their ‘19th Represents Summit’ on May 19 in Chicago and online. The summit will explore gender equality around tech, justice, and economic mobility, including Lift Our Voices’ work to protect survivors. You can learn more about the event here and register online!
Additionally, keep an eye out for an upcoming conversation with our co-founders and Lean In’s CEO, Rachel Thomas, on LinkedIn. We will send out more information when the link goes live.
In Celebration: We continue to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Washington State’s Silenced No More Act, which eliminated NDAs for survivors of workplace abuses. The bill expands on the Speak Out Act’s protections, making it a model for other states to follow. Read our op-ed on the bill in the Herald.
