Newsletter: January 2023
Dear Friend,
2022 was a historic year for workers’ rights and Lift Our Voices. The two federal bills we championed, the Speak Out Act and the Ending Forced Arbitration for Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act were both signed by President Biden after receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress. We worked to advance legislation to ban NDAs for toxic workplace issues at the state level and we continued to educate workers, corporate leaders, students, journalists, and elected officials about how we can make workplaces safer for everyone.
While 2023 has just begun, our work is in full swing.
This month, Gannett newspapers across the country published our op-ed about the legislation we helped shepherd through Congress. In case you missed it, you can read it here. To learn more about our landmark Speak Out Act, which eradicates pre-dispute NDAs for sexual misconduct, you can read our explainer on Medium. Together with the Ending Forced Arbitration for Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act, it represents the first federal legislation of the #Metoo movement and we are honored to have played a role in its passage from inception.
Stay tuned next month: Lift Our Voices is thrilled to launch our Know Your Rights campaign to better educate workers and organizations about the effects of our Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act. Though the legislation bans forced arbitration clauses for sexual misconduct, too many workers still do not know that they can now bring a lawsuit in open court in the event of sexual assault and harassment. Our national campaign will educate stakeholders about their new rights.
The Know Your Rights Campaign will go live on our website on February 7, with a video that addresses the effects of forced arbitration and the rights of workers to seek remedies under the new law. Additionally, we will be hosting a virtual panel in conjunction with American Lawyer Media on February 8, where we will be joined by Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) and former Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-IL), the co-sponsors of the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act. Stay tuned for more information on how to register.
Our work to create safer workplaces would not be possible without your support. We are proud of our progress last year, and, with your help, we will accomplish even more in 2023. To support our work, please consider donating to Lift Our Voices.
Sincerely,
— Gretchen Carlson & Julie Roginsky | Co-founders, Lift Our Voices
